Crossfit Comp #2 “THE DUO” (A Partner Competition…yes, someone had to put up with me)

I realized I forgot to write about my second crossfit competition experience which was a partner competition! FORGIVE ME!!! Okay, really, I know you guys don’t particularly care about this stuff like I do but I’m still going to document it for future reference.

“The Duo” at Crossfit Artis.

My partner: David (a guy who puts up with my awful jokes every morning at 5:30am and still decided to be my partner.)

It was a 2 day event. Saturday and Sunday with the top 3 teams competing in the final Event.

Event 1: Both partners Squat clean every 15 seconds for 6 minutes (Men’s weight 135#, Women’s 95#) then if you complete all 24 squat cleans you have the 7th minute to complete as many hand release lateral barbell burpees as possible. I got 27. Team “Snatch and Sniff” (that’s me and David) came in 2nd in that event.

Event 2 and 3: Partner 1 (that was me) runs 1000m while Partner 2 (David) does as many squats possible for 15 seconds at the start of every minute until I get back then we switch. I got back in the fastest time out of all the heats and just so happened to tag him as the start of the minute began so I immediately started squatting. My judge was awesome, pushed me to get at least 16 squats.  Event 2 is fastest total time for both runs.
Event 3 is total reps air squats. We won those events.

Event 4: Men will go first and will have 6 minutes to complete:

3 Deadlifts, 225# 3 Pullups 6 DL 6 PU 9 DL 9 PU….And so on until death. Just kidding, only until their 6 minutes is up.
Women will go second and will have 6 minutes to complete:
1 Deadlift, 155# 1 Pullup 3 DL 3 PU 5 DL 5 PU…. And so on until their 6 minutes has ended.

I think I ended up getting through 1/3/5/7/9 and 4 reps into 11 of the deadlifts but I’m pretty sure I blacked out during this one so I don’t know for sure.DSC02354

That was the end of Day 1. David and I were sitting in first place. Obviously. (Just kidding, I was very surprised. You know, cause David is a pansy. KIDDING! He’s kinda badass….kinda.)

Day 2!!! Feeling good! A little under pressure but, hey, that’s what competitions are about right?

Event 5:
50 Single Unders
40 KB Swings (1.5/1) For non-crossfitters it was 55lbs/35lbs
30 Shoulder to Overhead (115/75)
20 Sit ups
5 Wall Walks

I watched teams completely break down during the first 2 heats (We were 3rd heat) and while I wasn’t too worried about the workout, I started getting super scared….I mean, people were STRUGGLING with this. Fastest time I had to beat by the time I went was 6:10. Okay, I can do that, right?!??! YOU KNOW IT! 5:15!!!!!!  We got 1st in that event too.

DSC02427DSC02393

Top 3 teams competed in the Final Event……a 1 rep max snatch. My worst olympic lifting skill. Craptastic. Managed 105# but just wasn’t enough to make the top of the podium.

DSC02446DSC02427

We placed 2nd overall and I have to say, I was tickled with that. 🙂 It was fun, well-organized, and my partner was pretty fricken awesome. My family and friends came to cheer us on and take loads of pics and videos. Seriously, so amazing and I was so sore the following days, I hated crossfit. Like, really hated it for a few days. I got over that though. Back to training hard for my next comp over Labor Day weekend. YIKES!  www.terminatormom.com DSC02497

Megan Boyer Omaha NE

June 12th, 2013

Here is my wife Megan Boyer, Omaha NE, and her blog about her Ironman.  I am so proud of her and all of her hard work!!

Official Ironman..er Woman (Okay, half IronWoman)

I. Did. It! I accomplished my very first half Ironman!!!!!!! Please, please, enough applause! ;) I’ll try not to make this too long so I’ll provide you with the highlights.

It was a beautiful summer day in Lawrence, Kansas at 5am when the Terminator decided to head to her first Ironman 70.3 to compete against 1317 other competitors. Her goal? To finish in 7 hours. Her final time? 6 hours 17 minutes and 12 seconds. Did you expect anything less? I know I did. Ha! My division started the swim at 7am with 90 other competing women in my age/wave group. The water of Clinton lake was a choppy 71 degrees and I swallowed half of it during the  1.2 mile swim which I finished in 45 min 35 sec.  Slower than a lot of people but the fastest I’d ever swum it…swam it? (Plus I didn’t kick like everyone else…will learn to do this from now on so I can kick butt next time ’round)

Transitioning from swim to bike, I was off and riding the 56 miles of hilly terrain. Wind at around 15mph wasn’t too bad considering all my training rides were ridiculously windy and rainy. This was by far the best weather I had ever ridden in and the farthest I had ever biked. It was glorious and felt wonderful. Aside from having to stop and pee at mile 15 (from all the lake water I drank) I didn’t have to stop again. Ate 4 GU’s and drank 2 bottles of Complete Nutrition’s 3Plenish, my fueling was spot on. There were 2 hills that posed extremely difficult and LONG but aside from those the route wasn’t too bad. Bonus: No flat tires! YAY! Finished the bike in 3:14:11 (hr:min:sec) which was faster than the 4 hours I was anticipating!!!

Transitioning from bike to run, I felt great. Getting tired but that was to be expected. I switched shorts from my tri shorts to my favored LuLuLemon running shorts. Took less than 10 seconds and so glad I made that decision. Started off great. The sun was shining bright and it was warm but there were aid stations every mile so every time I grabbed a powerade, water, and cup of ice (to be dumped down my sports bra to cool me off. It worked.) Between mile 3-4, I hit a wall and my throat closed up and I felt like I was going to start crying. Really struggled for a half mile then worked through it and kept going. My feet were completely numb and felt like bricks for about 3 miles too. Slowed down a lot at mile 10 and 11 as my bad knee flared up and I was limping. Again, powered through and finished! Crossed the finish line, got my medal, the photographer took a picture (so thankful for my sunglasses cause my eyes were tearing up already), then I found Nick (the hubbie) and gave him a big sweaty kiss and tried to hold back my blubbering. I managed to not cry and hobbled out of the finishing area.  The run took me 2:09:02 with an average 9:50/mile. Not what I had hoped for but I’ll take it! The winner, Craig Alexander, did the WHOLE THING in 3:52:26. Amazing. But he is the WORLD’S BEST Triathlete. Pretty fricken cool that he was there too. Along with Hines Ward, two time super bowl champion. Yep, they asked for my autograph being the Terminatormom and everything….yeah, that didn’t happen.

All in all and INCREDIBLE experience and look forward to doing this again!!! I know, I’m crazy! :)

Thanks Complete Nutrition for powering my training and race day! And for all my running/biking buddies that trained with me, Troy for lending me his expert advice and red back bottle cages, Bob and Steph for getting me into this whole thing to begin with and going above and beyond helping me with lending me the road bike, doing work on my tri bike, and being incredible cheerleaders! But most of all to my husband, Nick, who put up with the long hours of training, complaining, exhaustion, panic, not to mention the heavily sprinkled triathlon talk that I’m certain he was sick of by month 2. And to the kids for being excited for mom to take this challenge on! LOVE  YOU ALL!!!!

Terminator out.

A Weekend to Remember

A Weekend To Remember: Part 1 (My Family Life Marriage Retreat)

Reposted by Nick Boyer

In our first year of marriage, Nick and I went to a marriage retreat put on by Family Life called “A Weekend To Remember“. It was by far the best thing we could have done to get our marriage started off right. And now 7 years later (coming up on our 8 yr wedding anniversary) we decided to celebrate Nick’s birthday by going again. AMAZING. There isn’t enough time in the day to write down everything that I want to share and I’m sure you wouldn’t sit and read it all anyway….we’ve got busy lives, am I right? ;) So I’m going to give you some highlights from this awesome 3-day experience I had with the world’s BEST husband (in my humble opinion).

Session 1: Why Marriages fail. The general message from this one is: “You’re either moving towards oneness or drifting towards isolation.”  Meaning, if you aren’t striving to become one with your spouse and gain a closer relationship and working towards it, then you’ll drift towards independence aka isolation and that weakens your relationship. You WILL have tough times BUT  if you can lean on each other, support each other, ENCOURAGE each other, you’ll make it through and aren’t diamonds made by extreme heat and pressure? God does all things for good and His creation of marriage is to make us stronger and better TOGETHER than we could EVER be apart!

Session 2: Can We Talk? (Communicating) We all communicate in our own ways and it’s important to recognize that and learn to LISTEN to each other with ACCEPTANCE and UNDERSTANDING.  Anger sabotages communication. “Let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger.” James 1:19. THINK before you speak.  And “Speak in a way that ENCOURAGES.”  Not everything you feel needs to be spoken because sometimes silence is best. “Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.” Ephesians 4:29

Session 3: Unlocking the Mystery of Marriage. Find the highest purpose for your marriage because then it will be that much more important and you’ll work harder for it.  The highest purpose? Make your marriage a good image of Jesus. Our marriage should be a reflection of God’s love. We need to focus on where we want to be not where we are. They told a story about Florence Chadwick who was the first woman to swim the British Channel and she struggled to finish in a dense fog, jelly fish stings, and pure exhaustion so she gave up because she was focused on where she was at that moment and it overwhelmed her. When she got in the boat she saw over the fog that she was less than a mile from shore. If she had just seen she was close to her goal she would have kept going. When we lose sight of the purpose, we give up. So stay the course!

Session 4: From How to Wow. Cultural patterns for marriage lately has been an epic failure and have created this pressure to focus on being great parents and successful in careers.  BUT, we need to make our relationship with our spouse the most important and primary relationship.  Kids, jobs, other family, friends and activities need to come AFTER that. LEAVE your parents and CLEAVE to your spouse, and become one. “The degree in which you leave is the degree in which you can cleave”. Many times we focus on our kids (if you’re a parent) and put them first HOWEVER, kids get security from their parents “oneness”. Its safe, it’s a solid foundation, and it doesn’t put the pressure on them to provide us with OUR happiness.

Session 5: What Every Marriage Needs. “To truly experience oneness in marriage, we must first experience the power that comes from oneness with God.” We are naturally selfish creatures and so when you pledged to love, honor, and cherish each other, what you really meant was you want someone to love, honor and cherish YOU.  We all make mistakes, we all sin but that doesn’t mean we’re a lost cause! We can achieve oneness with God because he came to Earth as Jesus Christ and what he achieved through his death, burial, and resurrection was paying the penalty for OUR sin and makes us NEW! And RESTORES that oneness with God!!!  Oneness with God gives us the ability and the desire to love others unconditionally, it shows us our sins (and He forgives then when we ask him), and helps us forgive others. It’s not easy, but that’s why God gave us a helper in the Holy Spirit.

I decided to share this delightful information in a 2 part post. Sorry! This is a mere glimpse of a HUGE amount of incredible information that was shared. :) Part 2 will include sessions 6-10: We fight too. Marriage after Dark. Woman to Woman (Man to Man<-going to try and bribe Nick in guest writing this part). How Marriages Thrive. Leaving a Legacy.

P.S. We got to “renew” our vows and so we had Hailey and Caden sign as our witnesses!

Megan Boyer Omaha NE TerminatorMom

February 28th, 2013

Megan Boyer Omaha NE— also called terminatormom. Her blog is growing fast and she has a lot of great tips and recipes for the mom who wants to get into shape. Megan is an inspiration to many women around the country as she talks about how to get into shape after having kids.

Megan Boyer Megan Boyer

My name’s Megan and I am a wife of an amazing husband and mother to 3 beautiful children and 2 English golden retrievers. I am what I like to call a “Professional Mom” which means I stay home and take care of the kids, house, dogs, yard and cook, bake, clean, chauffeur, coach, mediate (this one more than anything else…sigh….) and in the midst of all that train hard and eat healthy.

I like to think I’m funny and enjoy writing. I am NOT a professional fitness trainer nor nutritionist or dietician. The information I blog about is my own personal perspective on various topics relating to fitness/nutrition and sometimes everyday life.  I suppose you are also wondering about the “terminator” part. Well, my friends refer to me as a machine when it comes to training hard.  And thus, “Terminator” was born. Either that or I’m really a machine sent from the future….
